The BFI in partnership with Higher Education

Mitchell & Kenyon Film still

The BFI cares for the world's greatest collections of film and television material and we are delighted to announce that we are establishing a formal partnership with the Higher Education sector. The partnership will enable us to attract investment for a new joint venture where an innovative programme of research and teaching will be based around the BFI collections, putting them at the heart of British film and screen studies. Through achieving greater understanding of the collections the BFI will open up access for wider sections of the public.

Over the years the BFI has had a variety of successful HE initiatives but recently has been seeking a more strategic approach. We are now creating a working group of HE institutions who together will establish the joint venture in screen and film studies. The working group will also develop the model for a new British Film Research Resource which will further open the BFI’s collections up to the HE sector and beyond.

The working group will be made up of a number of HE institutions from different regions in order to ensure that the joint venture and the Research Resource model benefit the sector as a whole. The lead partner amongst the HE institutions will be Goldsmiths, University of London, which has a 5* research rating and a longstanding international reputation for scholarship and practice in film and media. The other HE partners will be announced shortly. It is expected that an initial funding bid to support the establishment of the new joint venture will be made in the autumn.
