Television Quiz Shows INSET
NEW DATE - 10:00, Tue 10 Feb | NFT 1
These sessions are aimed at helping teachers to approach the Quiz Show as a case study topic. The focus will be on providing background key concept information for teachers and then exploring ways of approaching this in the classroom with students. Important areas such as the role of quizzes in the television industries, their importance for audiences, how the genre has developed, as well as issues of representation will be covered. In spite of the controversies surrounding these shows from Mastermind to Millionaire the quiz show survives as one of the few indigenous television genres. How does it do it?

The Snowman (UK 1982. Dir Diane Jackson, 35 min.) Weds 10 December 2008 10.30-13.00 NFT 1
This seasonal screening is aimed at introducing a new generation of primary school children to the classic, award-winning animated film, The Snowman, based on Raymond Briggs’ animated book. The film tells the story without words of a boy who builds and befriends a Snowman depicting the adventures they experience together. It is a touching, humorous film which both children and adults relate to warmly. The film will be introduced to guide pupils’ viewing regarding narrative and character and after the screening there will be a series of fun activities linked to the film and its characters.
Suitable for Key Stage 1 and Year 3 only.
The Incredibles (US 2004.Dir Brad Bird 120 min.) Fri 3 April 2009 10.30-13.00 NFT 1
This end of spring term screening of the Oscar-winning animation, The Incredibles, is suitable for primary pupils and will assist teachers in developing work around heroes and superheroes. The story revolves around superhero Bob (Mr Incredible) who is thrilled at the prospect of some adventure after many years in retirement. He accepts a mysterious invitation to take part in a secret mission but when he goes missing, Bob's wife and children are forced to pool their superpowers to save him and the world. The introduction will guide pupils to think about character and plot and we will be including after-screening activities which will enhance pupils’ understanding and enjoyment of the film.
Suitable for Upper Key Stage 1 and Years 3 and 4 only.
The Princess Bride (US 1987 Dir Rob Reiner 98 min.) Fri 10 July 2009 10.30-13.00 NFT 3
This summer term screening of the Oscar-winning film, The Princess Bride, is based on the book and screenplay by William Goldman and will make pupils think anew about stereotypes and predicted outcomes in fairytales. This is the precursor of Shrek (minus the animation), as the narrative deliberately sets out to subvert all expected character-types and familiar swashbuckling plots with humour and a light touch. Arguably, this film has not had the exposure it deserves in the UK and will provide a pleasurable experience for those who attend. An introduction and follow-up activities will stretch pupils’ understanding of fairytales, love stories and comic plots.
Suitable for Key Stage 2, Years 4-6 only.
