More than 608 films were produced in 1908, of which this is a small but fascinating sample, featuring a dog that can drive a car, pond scum and where bananas came from.

This year's centenary programme is a mix of fiction and non-fiction films illustrating world events and developments in the film industry. There was a lot going on in 1908, not least the Olympics - in London. In the film business trouble had been brewing for some years, but it hadn't yet affected the volume of production. More than 608 films were produced in Britain in 1908, of which this is a small but fascinating sample, featuring a dog that can drive a car, pond scum and where bananas come from.
