Back to the Future Part II

Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale's very ingenious sequel to their first surprisingly Oedipal sci-fi fable finds Marty McFly and Doc Brown flitting between the 50s, 1985 and 2015 in a desperate attempt to prevent the former's unborn kids going to jail and to stop Hill Valley being turned into a hell on earth. Fast, funny, action-packed entertainment that’s also food for plenty of thought.

Highlander

Mentored in the art of battle by fellow immortal Sean Connery, Scottish swordsman Christopher Lambert travels to and fro between the Highlands of the sixteenth century and modern-day New York, as he is engaged in deadly conflict with a likewise time-travelling foe from a rival clan. Not, perhaps, the most plausibly plotted of sci-fi films, but preposterously frantic fun all the same.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day

The machines running the world in 2029 send a cyborg back in time to kill, while he's still a teenager, future resistance hero John Connor; so the resistance send a cyborg that looks identical to the one which once laid siege to Connor's mother... Trouble is, he's not as technologically sophisticated as the shape-shifting would-be killer. A spectacular big-budget sequel to Cameron's original (which plays in The Time Machine season at BFI Southbank). Screening in 70mm.

12 Monkeys

Inspired partly by Chris Marker's La Jetée (screening in BFI Southbank's Time Machine season), Gilliam's typically inventive apocalyptic saga stars Bruce Willis as the prisoner of a futuristic state who can earn parole by agreeing to track down - through time - a prominent virologist's mentally unbalanced son (Brad Pitt) whose environmental action group may have been involved in the spread of a virus that killed billions. A splendidly sprawling rumination on time, cause and effect, catastrophe and ecology, madness and memory.
