Hyenas
Little-known masterpiece from Senegal.
Djibril Diop Mambéty's film drips with vitriol and is super-savvy about consumerism and greed in its tale of a jilted rich woman who helps a poor village... But at what cost?
Our film magazines and TV programmes cover African films made by white people, but seldom mention masterpieces such as Hyenas, directed by Senegal's Djibril Diop Mambéty. Its tale of a jilted rich woman who helps a poor village drips with vitriol and is super-savvy about consumerism and greed. Slowly it dawns on us what the woman's terms are... Really scary. We greatly undervalue African film.
