The former President embarks on a promotional tour for his controversial book 'Palestine: Peace, Not Apartheid', and responds to his numerous critics with eloquence and humour.
With several excellent documentaries already to his name, Jonathan Demme here turns his attention to a former US president, following him on the promotional tour for his controversial book 'Palestine: Peace, Not Apartheid'.
Succeeding both as an incisive, unsentimental portrait of a remarkably active, brave, sharp-witted octogenarian and as a potent reminder of the ongoing plight of the Palestinians (and of the woeful reluctance of many to recognise their suffering and its causes), the film is admirably balanced in giving voice not only to the very eloquent and fair-minded Carter but to his critics - some of whom haven't even read the book. Larry King, rabbis, radio talk-show hosts, Al Jazeera - Carter takes them all on, making for a film that's often as funny as it's profoundly serious.
