The Goddess
Chinese icon, Ruan Lingyu's greatest film.
Ruan Lingyu was China's answer to Garbo and Dietrich and this is her greatest film, accompanied by a splendid recent score by composer Kimho Ip.
Where to start? The great, mysterious stars of the 30s were Garbo and Dietrich, right? Wrong. The Chinese actress Ruan Lingyu was as famous as either, had a unique body language and realism, and was hounded by the press, and so killed herself. And yet in most discussions of stardom, she's seldom mentioned. This is her greatest film. It's accompanied by a splendid recent score by composer Kimho Ip.
