A History of Violence
A terrific thriller, and arguably David Cronenberg's best film.
Stylish and slyly subversive, Cronenberg's film grips like a strangler from start to finish, with Viggo Mortenson excellent as the family man whose heroic act opens a life-changing can of worms.
Loosely adapted by Josh Olsen from a John Wagner-penned graphic novel with Mortensen as the smalltown diner owner whose heroic intervention when armed thugs attempt to rob his place opens a life-altering can of worms as elements from his past threaten both his family and their future. Superbly directed by Cronenberg with devastating performances all round, this genre-busting thriller is scary and subversive, compelling and redemptive.
