Don't Look Now
Nicolas Roeg's superb, haunting chiller.
Nicolas Roeg's haunting Daphne du Maurier adaptation is a powerful, nightmarish mystery with superb performances from Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland.
Cinema has long revelled in its own capacity to imagine and show the future, but it has more rarely dealt with the subject of an individual's clairvoyance. Roeg's adaptation of a Daphne du Maurier story, about a couple grieving over the death of their young daughter, is undoubtedly one of the finest examples; from its superbly mounted opening to the nightmarish ending, the film remains suspensefully ambivalent as to whether the various 'visions' are of the future, the past or merely imagined.
