Not only does the Coens' woefully underrated movie pay fond tribute to the newspaper comedies of an earlier era (think Hepburn, Hawks, Capra), but it plays sly and subtle games with time, proposing that it's stoppable, elastic, relative (the rat race moves at a different speed in heaven), faddish, cyclical or circular – like a hula-hoop.
