A tale of greed, lust, murder and retribution set in 1940s California and shot in lustrous monochrome, The Man Who Wasn't There bears the marks of James M Cain and the noir movies his work inspired. Yet its flying-saucer motifs and the alienated persona of narrator Ed Crane (Thornton) also hint at 50s paranoia and monster movies - an apt choice, we hope, for Halloween.
